Death, debris and devastation! This is what we find after the dreadful earthquake that shook the country on the Republic Day morning. The scenarios all around are pathetic and heart breaking. Man becomes helpless and asks why?

Well, the science may give you the latest explanation as the earth's layers slide against each other due to the steady drifting of the Asian subcontinent towards the north. But this is not nothing new because the oldest book in the scripture says that there is a steady drift in the whole constellation towards the north. Then again you may ask, why that?

May I draw your kind attention to the most authentic scientific source - the scripture. There you find various occasions when earth trembled which can be categorised under three heads:

1. At the physical presence of the Almighty God - as God descends to the earth, it shivers and rocks tear apart. Examples are many. At mount Sinai during the time of Moses, Prophet Elijah being shown the glory of God or at the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

2. When the sin of the inhabitants grow grievous and the land cries for justice, the Lord visits the people with his judgements in the form of various natural calamities. We find examples in Sodom, with Koreh and his people, the flood at the times of Noah and many others in recent times.

3. And as the sign of the second advent of Jesus Christ as told by Jesus to His disciples. He comes to gather His people home which is the eternal home of heaven. Only His children! And others will be left out in this difficult world. (John 1:12)

The frequent earthquakes that we have been experiencing can only be explained with the third category above. If so what are we to do? That is the relevant question of the time that needs answer. May I suggest two things

Live in a closer relationship with the Almighty God. This involves obedience to the word of God and be faithful to that God.

Subsequent to the above, we live in a better relationship with men around us.

A good and healthy relationship both vertical and horizontal. To achieve this, we need a change, a change of mind. St. Paul calls it Transformation of mind. A transformed mind sets aside worldly patterns of living and discovers patterns of thinking that are pleasing to God. It understands the will of God and that which is good. (Romans 12:2)

It is like metamorphosis. The ugly, wrinkling larva is transformed into a beautiful butterfly. Where is the ugly larva again? It is everything new. A new life in Jesus, born of the word of God established in heaven. We take on the mind of Christ and become more like Christ. Is that not wonderful!

It is then we face the tremor, even a devastating one, with hope and peace because He is coming. Jesus is coming soon to gather His people. Will you be there in that fold?
